I'm pregnant and feeling unprepared for what comes after birth.

I'm postpartum and struggling to find a routine that actually works.

Everyday tasks like getting dressed, transitions, or sitting through a meal feel like a battle.

I'm exhausted and overwhelmed, and not even sure what kind of support I need.

I've noticed my child struggles in busy or loud environments.

I just know something feels off, and I deserve more than being told it's normal.

Services for

Kids

The early years are full of big milestones, and sometimes little ones need extra support to get there. If your child is having difficulty with everyday tasks like holding a crayon, getting dressed, or navigating a busy environment, occupational therapy can help.

We work with children ages 1–5 to build the foundational skills they need to thrive at home, in play, and as they prepare for school. Each child receives individualized, play-based care in a warm and supportive environment.

Fine motor skills involve the small muscles of the hands and fingers that we rely on for almost every daily task. When these muscles are underdeveloped or poorly coordinated, even simple activities can feel frustrating or exhausting. OT helps children build the underlying strength and control that makes these tasks feel manageable.

  • Grasping and releasing objects

  • Holding utensils, crayons, or a pencil

  • Turning pages, using scissors

  • Picking up small objects like beads or buttons

  • Zipping, snapping, or fastening clothing

  • Building hand strength and dexterity over time

Fine Motor Skills

A young girl with braided hair, wearing a gray T-shirt and blue jeans, enjoying a ride on a wooden slide outdoors surrounded by green trees and sunlight because at Strong Roots OT in south NJ and Philadelphia, we provide OT for sensory processing.

Sensory Processing

Every nervous system is different. Some children are easily overwhelmed by noise, touch, or movement, while others crave constant sensory input and have a hard time settling. When sensory processing differences start to interfere with daily life, learning, or social connection, it is worth looking closer. Paula uses strategies based in neurodevelopment and sensory processing & regulation theories to help children better regulate their responses and feel more at ease in their environment.

  • Overwhelm in busy, loud, or crowded spaces

  • Strong reactions to certain textures, fabrics, or foods

  • Difficulty with transitions or unexpected changes

  • Actively seeking out movement, pressure, or stimulation

  • Challenges with attention or emotional regulation

  • Trouble with social participation or group settings

A child writing with their right hand using a pencil. At Strong Roots OT in South NJ & Philadelphia, our occupational therapists focus on fine motor skills for young children and handwriting skills for school.

Handwriting

Handwriting is one of the most complex fine motor tasks children are asked to do, and difficulty with it rarely comes down to effort or attention. It involves multiple systems of the body, including visual systems, proprioceptive capabilities, hand strength, and so much more. When any part of that foundation isn’t quite there, the whole skill suffers. Early support can make a significant difference before frustration sets in.

  • Letter formation and pencil control

  • Staying within lines or on the page

  • Inconsistent sizing or spacing of letters

  • Fatigue during writing tasks

  • Confidence and participation in early academic settings

Self-Help Skills

Being able to manage their own body and daily routine is foundational to a child's sense of confidence and independence. When these tasks feel hard, the ripple effect moves through the whole family. We work with children on the motor skills, sequencing, and problem solving that make daily routines feel less like a battle, and supports caregivers with practical strategies they can use at home.

  • Dressing and undressing independently

  • Feeding, including utensil use and managing different textures

  • Toileting and hygiene routines

  • Grooming tasks like brushing teeth or hair

  • Breaking multi-step activities into manageable steps

  • Caregiver strategies for smoother daily routines
